Greater Western Water (GWW) has completed an essential upgrade to a 134-year-old water main on Royal Parade in Parkville, securing a safe and reliable water service for the local community for years to come.
GWW’s Royal Parade Upgrade Project began in May last year and involved replacing the existing water main with two kilometres of new pipeline.
Construction involved using slip-lining technology to insert a new 560mm diameter pipeline inside the existing 750mm diameter wrought iron water main. Slip-lining is a method that inserts the new pipeline inside the existing water main.
The use of slip-lining technology to carry out these works along a major urban road helped to limit disruption to local businesses, limit water supply interruptions and pressure, and make construction safer and more time efficient.
GWW’s Acting General Manager, Growth and Infrastructure, Bri George said the water main’s condition and close location to essential services made the upgrade a high priority.
“The Royal Parade water main is a critical asset and has been providing the Parkville community with reliable water services since 1889, that’s more than 130 years of ongoing use,” she said.
“Our investment in this upgrade was crucial to ensuring our customers continue to receive reliable water services for decades to come and highlights our ongoing commitment to supporting our city’s growth.”
“We would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding while we carried out these essential works.”
The project was delivered in partnership with Fulton Hogan. Visit the Royal Parade Upgrade Project page to find out more.
