We’ve completed an upgrade on the water main at Royal Parade.
After more than 130 years of reliable service, the aging infrastructure has been replaced with 2km of new pipeline, extending from Princes Park to Genetics Lane.
We began working on this project in May 2023 and the new main was completed in January 2024. We completed the upgrade in partnership with Fulton Hogan.

Community benefits
This upgrade project ensures reliable water services to communities living in Parkville and Melbourne’s CBD.
The new and improved pipeline will help support future growth and increased demands for our services.
The upgrade will also reduce the risk of leaks, bursts, and service interruptions.
How we upgraded the pipe
We used the slip-lining method to upgrade the Royal Parade water mains. This technique involves inserting a new pipeline inside the existing water main. We chose this method as it causes less disruption than other traditional excavation methods. Slip-lining is also cost effective and results in less environmental impacts.

Environmental care and cultural heritage
During the project, we worked closely with residents and other stakeholders to minimise delays and disruptions. We also engaged with Heritage Victoria to look after the heritage features of the area.
