New mega water tank to boost water security for Greater Melton
30 December 2024
Greater Western Water is completing construction on a water tank on Minns Road in Melton, which is set to help secure the region’s water supplies for the next 100 years.
Melbourne's west is one of our fastest growing regions, and this $24 million project is one of many supporting the growth of the Greater Melton. The area is expecting around 6.0% annual growth to 2028.
The new tank will be able to hold 30 megalitres of water, the equivalent of 12 Olympic sized swimming pools. The increased tank capacity will ensure we can continue to supply safe and reliable water supplies for current and future generations, and increase our resilience to changing populations and climate.
Member for Melton Steve McGhie recently visited the site, seeing the sheer size of the tank and its capacity at 11.5 metres high and 70 metres in diameter.
"It's exciting to see this project nearing completion, with nearly double the amount of water soon to be stored safely in the new tank shoring up supplies for the Melton community." said Steve McGhie.
"This project will help boost our water supplies here in Melton, ensuring we can provide safe and reliable drinking water for everyone who lives here now, and who will live here in 100 years’ time.” Steve continued.
"This project is one of many investments we're making to secure our water supplies for the future, with this one playing an essential role in serving one of Melbourne's fastest growing communities." said Ian Burton, Greater Western Water's General Manager for Growth and Infrastructure.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the tank's elevated position lets water flow downhill naturally to supply water to the area. This makes it more cost effective and energy efficient, as it reduces carbon emissions and costs associated with the use of pump stations.
Greater Western Water is completing the project in partnership with Aquametro, with the final touches expected to be completed by early February 2025.
