Greater Western Water (GWW) applauded the creative talents of local primary school students at a National Water Week poster awards ceremony last night.
Schools across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges scooped the awards pool, with 15 of the 17 prizes on offer going to students from Braemar College in Woodend, Goonawarra, Killara, and St Anne’s primary schools in Sunbury, and Gisborne and St Brigid’s primary schools in Gisborne.
Students from St Joseph’s Primary School in Werribee and Myrniong Primary School also received prizes. Two students from Gisborne progressed to take out top Victorian honors for their poster designs.
General Manager Strategy and Partnerships, Kessia Thomson said the competition was hotly contested across 21 schools in the service region and there was an extremely high standard of entries.
“The competition attracted a record number of 1018 poster entries in 2022 with many diverse and creative interpretations of the theme, ‘Our Water Stories’”.
Ms. Thomson said the theme encouraged students to explore the significant cultural role water plays in our lives.
“Reflecting on the importance of water and how it has shaped our history beginning with the First Nations peoples is vital.
“It’s inspiring to see the students use art to demonstrate their understanding of the precious resource and the critical need to protect it,” she said.
Southern Rural Water were major sponsors of the school prize which was awarded to St Brigid’s Primary School, Gisborne for their significant contribution to the competition. The $500 prize will go towards a sustainable project of the school’s choosing.
