Greater Western Water (GWW) has successfully switched the GWW geographic system map base to GDA2020 (Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020).
The change, which took place on 19 February, helps bring Australia’s latitude and longitude coordinates into line with global satellite positioning systems. This project forms part of our program of work transforming the way we capture, use, manage and share spatial information about our assets.
Why was the change necessary?
Between 1994 (when GDA was last upgraded) and 2020, the earth’s tectonic plates moved a staggering 1.8m to the northeast.
We need to switch to GDA2020 so that maps of GWW assets work perfectly with the maps used by our building and development partners.
This initiative is being led by Land Victoria and all Victorian water corporations are required to make the switch.
Supporting partners through the switch
Our project team is on stand-by to provide any additional support our partners and contractors may need.
We will support the submission of ‘as-contracted’ plans in GDA94 (with datum labelled) to allow our business partners to transition to GDA2020.
