Greater Western Water undertakes major upgrade of water main network in Moonee Ponds
28 July 2022
Greater Western Water (GWW) is replacing an existing water main network in Moonee Ponds that is over 100 years old to ensure the community continues to receive clean and reliable water for years to come.
As part of the $7.6 million upgrade, 2.8km of water mains will be constructed on Alexander Avenue, Feehan Avenue, McPherson Street, Albion Street and Pascoe Vale Road.
GWW General Manager, Growth and Infrastructure, Amanda Smith said the upgrade was essential because the existing water main network was nearing the end of its service life.
“The new water main network will have a much larger capacity to help meet the needs of the local community it serves and ensure a safe and secure water supply for the area,” she said.
“Minimising impacts and the safety of the local community is a high priority for us while we carry out these works, which will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption.”
“The staged approach will mean changes to the way locals move around the area with detours and traffic management in place to help vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists move safely around.”
“We also have a dedicated community engagement team and drop-in centre on site, and we encourage local residents and businesses to drop by and chat about construction impacts and activities.”
Jaydo Construction has been appointed to deliver the upgrade, which started in late June. Construction of the new pipe is complete in Alexandra Avenue and currently underway in Feehan Avenue. All works are scheduled to be completed by early 2023.
