$23 million investment to boost water security for Melton
5 April 2024
We’re building a giant water tank in Melton to boost water security for Melton’s growing population.
The $23 million investment will secure a reliable water supply for the wider Melton region for the next 100 years.
Construction is underway on Minns Road and when completed later this year, the new tank will be able to hold 30ML of water – the equivalent of 12 Olympic-sized pools!
A new tank is being built in Melton to increase the drinking water storage capacity for the fast-growing region.
The new tank will be 10 metres high and 70 metres in diameter and its elevated position means water will be able to flow downhill naturally to supply water to the area, making it more cost effective and energy efficient.
Our Acting General Manager of Growth and Infrastructure, Bri George, said the investment highlighted our commitment to provide reliable water services for our communities.
"It also shows how we're improving our resilience to changing populations and climate,” she said.
“Melbourne’s west is rapidly growing and it’s essential we prepare for future water demand by investing in infrastructure so we can continue to supply safe and clean water.”
The new tank replaces a 20ML water tank which was demolished on the same site last year as it was reaching the end of its operational life.
Design and construction of the tank is being delivered in partnership with Aqua Metro.
