We’re building a new water tank in Minns Rd, Melton to increase drinking water storage capacity for this fast-growing region.

Project overview
The new drinking water tank is located at the corner of Minns Rd and Bulmans Rd in Melton.
We’re investing $24 million to replace the existing tank with a more durable and larger tank.
The new tank is made from welded steel and measures 70 metres in diameter and reaches 11.5 metres high. It will have the capacity to hold 30 million litres – which is enough water to fill 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
The tank has been designed with sustainability in mind; its elevated position lets water flow downhill naturally to supply water to the area. This thoughtful design saves money and is energy efficient, as it reduces carbon emissions and costs associated with the use of pump stations.
Construction on the tank began late 2022 and is expected to be operational by December 2024.
The project is being delivered in partnership with Aqua Metro.

Why the project is needed
The existing tank was nearing the end of its operational life and needed replacement. In building a new tank, we took the opportunity to increase its capacity to meet the growing population’s needs.
Benefits for Melton
This project supports our 2030 Strategy to provide safe and reliable water supplies, while also increasing our resilience to changing populations and climate.
The new tank is designed to last more than 100 years, twice the duration of the original tank, making it durable and built for current and future generations.
The tank will have a 50% increased capacity to support the growing Melton area, which is experiencing an annual population growth of 6.61%.
The increased water storage ensures a reliable supply during dry periods, improving resilience to climate change.
Local impacts of the works
We’re committed to letting local communities know about our works. If you live near the site, we’ll contact you with details of any potential impacts. As the project continues, we’ll keep you updated.
Here’s what you can expect:
all construction at Minns Rd within the existing boundaries
increased trucks, traffic, noise and dust near the site
all construction noise to comply with regulations.
